I can safely say that my house smells bad, that my room smells worse, and that this vexes me. This has got me to thinking about smells and that oft-asked question, "what's your favourite smell," with the classic answer: "freshly-cut grass."
I have taken to Chinese culture/life/everything with an unexpected fervour of late (when I say 'of late,' I really mean over the last few years, but either way the point still stands). this has extended from history via language to the culture and more specifically...THE FOOD! I bloody love Chinese food.
It would be foolish to say that all Chinese food smells good: this is not the case. Having walked around the streets of many a Chinese town last Summer I can say with some authority that some Chinese food smells worse than shit. There is however one smll that has improved my life forever.
I did a brief cookery course in Yangshuo and it was here that my eyes (and nostrils) were opened. Sesame oil comes with a smell sent from heaven. On opening the bottle you are teased with a hint at the smell but it is not until you splash the wok and turn on the heat that the true heavenly aroma is revealed!
From now on I know, without a doubt what my answer to that question will be, and if you've read this far, then so do you.
